Site not working in Edge? Check Tracking Prevention
Microsoft Edge blocks trackers itself, at three levels: Basic, Balanced (the default) and Strict. Strict in particular can break embedded content, sign-ins and some shopping sites.
Updated November 2026. Menus move around between versions: if a label is a little different, look for the closest match.
Signs it’s Tracking Prevention
- Empty boxes where videos, social posts or widgets should be.
- It works in another browser, or in Edge after switching Tracking Prevention to Basic.
- It only breaks in InPrivate windows (Edge can use Strict there automatically).
Quick test: is it Tracking Prevention?
- Click the lock icon (site information) at the left of the address bar.
- Switch Tracking prevention for this site off.
- Reload. If the page works, Tracking Prevention was the cause.
See what was blocked
The same site-information panel shows how many trackers were blocked; select it to see the list of domains. Look for a video host, comments service, payment provider or sign-in domain.
Fix it
- For this site only: leave the per-site switch off. Your exceptions are in Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Tracking prevention → Exceptions.
- Everywhere: if Strict breaks too much, Balanced blocks most trackers while keeping sites working.
- InPrivate: the option “Always use Strict tracking prevention when browsing InPrivate” is on the same settings page.
Good to know
- Edge reports these blocks the same way extensions do, so they’re easy to mix up with an ad-blocker extension. If you have one, test with it paused too.
- Microsoft Defender SmartScreen is separate: it blocks whole sites it considers dangerous, with a full-page warning.
