Site not working in Opera? Check the built-in ad blocker
Opera (and Opera GX) can block ads and trackers on its own, without any extension. When it’s on, it can take embedded players, comment sections or a site’s own scripts with it.
Updated November 2026. Menus move around between versions: if a label is a little different, look for the closest match.
Quick test
- Click the shield icon at the right of the address bar (it appears when Opera has blocked something).
- Turn blocking off for this site.
- Reload. If the page works, Opera’s blocker was the cause.
Fix it
- For this site only: leaving blocking off from the shield icon adds the site to Opera’s exceptions.
- Review or undo exceptions: Settings → Privacy protection, next to the ad-blocking and tracker-blocking switches, under Manage exceptions.
- Ad blocking and tracker blocking are separate switches. If only one breaks the site, keep the other on.
Good to know
- Opera reports these blocks the same way extensions do. If you also use a blocker extension, pause it too when testing.
- Opera’s built-in VPN changes your network path. If a site won’t load at all, try with the VPN off.
